About the Position
Summary
Position Summary: The Director of Development leads revenue generation and development strategy for all areas of individual giving, donor stewardship, and engagement at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. This role supervises the Senior Major Gifts Officer and Development Coordinator, and supports the implementation of the Gardens’ non-cash giving, planned giving, and tribute programs.
Working Conditions
Working Conditions: Basic mobility is expected in offices, grounds, and exhibition areas. Ability to observe details at close range and communicate information accurately with others. Engage in occasional object manipulation with or without assistance, and efficiently navigate the workspace to access essential resources. Manage occasional lifting tasks, and ability to handle objects weighing up to 20 pounds with ease and regularity. This job operates in a professional indoor office environment, across grounds, and exhibition areas. Occasionally, may be required to work outdoors under inclement weather conditions. Occasional assignment to off-shift duties.
Job Duties
Essential Functions:
• Provide leadership, supervision, and mentorship to the development team.
• Develop and execute departmental strategies and objectives to meet fundraising goals in membership, grants, major and mid-level giving, corporate and foundation support, and the overall strategic plan.
• Lead the planning and growth of the annual fund/unrestricted giving program, including acquisition, retention, monthly renewals, and direct mail solicitation campaigns.
• Develop, manage, and report on the department budget.
• Design and implement a donor-centric stewardship program that deepens relationships with current and prospective donors.
• Identify and pursue new revenue opportunities.
• Collaborate with departments across the organization to ensure coordinated support for fundraising initiatives.
• Oversee the major and planned giving program to ensure continued revenue growth.
• Support the Database Coordinator in managing donor data with an emphasis on strategic analysis and strong data integrity.
• Partner with the Marketing and Promotions Department to develop promotional strategies that align with fundraising priorities.
• Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Requirements
Education and/or qualifications preferred:
• Education: Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, communications, marketing, public relations, arts administration, or a related field is required. A master’s degree in business, nonprofit leadership, or a related field is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may also be considered.
• Experience:
o Minimum of eight to ten (8-10) years of fundraising experience.
o Two (2) years of experience managing and supervising teams in related field.
o Ability to manage and maintain assigned budgets and reports.
o Experience soliciting major gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations.
o Experience with various computer software applications (Microsoft Office, Outlook, Teams, etc.)
o Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Skill/Knowledge/Licenses:
o Background in Major Giving and Planned Giving
o Strong organizational and time management skills; ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
o Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across departments and with diverse teams.
o Professional, punctual, and self-directed.
o Availability to work occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
o Familiarity with donor databases such as Salesforce CRM or Raiser’s Edge NXT preferred.
