About the Position

Location: Grand Rapids, MI

Hours:  Full-time

As the Regional Director of Major Gifts, you will primarily be responsible for serving as a local support resource and extension of the Donor Engagement Department in relation to giving for Major Donors. This individual will also be responsible for portfolio management and fundraising strategy for both the branch and the agency priority service areas in their assigned region.

Success in this role includes maximizing giving in the respective region, while also coaching and providing face to face activities that yield the best result to include but not limited to the nurturing of donor prospects to facilitate growth in capacity. This position is expected to function effectively with limited supervision while following the guidelines given on procedures, along with agency, federal, and state regulatory requirements.

Job Duties


  • Cultivate relationships, solicit donations, and achieve revenue targets established to fulfill Bethany’s mission;
  • Effectively model Christ in both individual and corporate life;
  •  Provide local support as an extension of the Donor Engagement Department in relation to giving for Major Donors;
  •  Serve as a local resource for one’s own major donor portfolio management and associated Branch Directors;
  • Provide support and leadership to the branch and agency fundraising efforts;
  •  Contribute to, and sign off on, branch and regional fundraising plans while actively monitoring branch and region contribution revenue progress in relation to annual fundraising goals;
  •  Develop local relationships with Bethany staff, board, and stakeholders;
  •  Collaboratively work with Branch Directors, Regional Directors, and the Regional Vice President of Operations on shared contribution revenue objectives;
  •  Partner with the Donor Engagement Department to establish best practice fundraising;
  •  Work with the donor engagement strategic operations team to establish benchmarks and KPIs to track and complete annual revenue targets;
  •  Work collaboratively with the donor engagement strategic operations team to create national major gift tasks that align with the annual branch and regional fundraising plan and national agency contribution revenue goals;
  •  Effectively raise funds that support the work of Bethany Global, Bethany Refugee and Bethany Vulnerable Kids in the US focal areas within the assigned region;
  • Serve as an assigned program champion as requested by the direct supervisor to promote and ensure team fundraising goals are met individually and by the team as a whole;
  •  Manage an effective pipeline of donor prospects, both within and outside the current active donor file to meet the goals of the program, while effectively utilizing the applicable Microsoft Office products and Raiser’s Edge technology used to document contacts in timely manner;
  •  Attend required meetings and communicate effectively with all internal stakeholders;
  •  Research industry trends, profile donors, and participate in professional development activities and core competency trainings, as necessary;
  •  Provide leadership on occasional branch and national fundraising events;
  •  Travel to meetings or donor appointments, as necessary;
  •  Represent Bethany, and its core values, in all forms of communication;
  •  Stay up-to date on trends and innovative donor relations techniques and best practices by networking with organizational affiliates, and attending functions and events;
  •  Complete other duties as assigned.



  • Bachelor’s level degree in Business, Philanthropy/Fundraising, or related field of study from an accredited college;
  • At least eight (8) years of experience in fundraising, sales, or donor engagement capacity with strong network connections in the respective region;
  •  Must have a broad knowledge of basic principles, concepts, and methodology of fundraising and building donor relationships;
  •  Prior experience with a CRM/DMS system to include Raisers Edge, preferred;
  •  Experience in child/family welfare agency, a plus;
  • Demonstrated ability with establishing relationships both in person and on the phone;
  •  Demonstrated ability to stay focused and committed while prospecting, stewarding, and cultivating relationships;
  •  Must possess excellent interpersonal skills and be a team player;
  •  Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  •  Must possess strong multi-tasking and project management skills;
  •  Self-starter with the ability to be innovative, while providing superior client services;
  •  Must be analytical and agile in an evolving work environment;
  •  Possess multi-tasking abilities with minimal supervision while managing projects and timelines;
  •  Intermediate to advanced level skills in Microsoft Office Suite/Outlook 365;
  •  A commitment to the highest-level standards of professionalism and fundraising best practices;
  •  Must be reliable with time sensitive deadlines and tasks;
  •  Exercise a high level of confidentiality and integrity;
  •  Active motor vehicle license and a reliable automobile with adequate insurance coverage;
  •  Pass a criminal history screen, including state and local child protection agency registries;
  •  Subscription to and integration of the agency Statement of Faith, Mission Statement, and Cultural Diversity Commitment.
