Director of Marketing and Communications, Grand Rapids Christian Schools

About the Position


The Director of Marketing and Communications focuses on communicating a compelling story for Grand Rapids Christian Schools (GRCS) that is aligned to our mission and core values of Christ, Community and Commitment. The Director is responsible to drive communications strategies and initiatives that raise the visibility of GRCS, grow community engagement, and deliver deep value to both internal and external constituencies. The Director oversees a variety of projects and plays a critical role in the success of mission advancement efforts (including marketing, communications, brand experience, admissions, development/fundraising, and community engagement) at Grand Rapids Christian Schools. The Director leads and shapes brand experience across its many advancement efforts.

Working Conditions

Full-time, full-year, exempt; 1.0 FTE.

Job Duties

Lead storyteller for Grand Rapids Christian Schools.
Design, create, and implement annual comprehensive marketing and communications strategies to increase the visibility of GRCS to all its stakeholders.
Lead all marketing efforts, including but not limited to brand management, messaging, print materials, social media, web, and press releases to advance the district’s strategic and operating objectives and increase engagement with prospective and current constituencies.
Oversee and actively manage the digital presence of GRCS across a variety of online platforms, including web and social media, providing support and training to internal users as needed across the district.
Develop and implement social media plans that support the school’s enrollment, retention, and development efforts.
Oversee the district’s social media channels, providing plans and strategy to inform and direct campuses in their use of social media.
Monitor online community feedback of GRCS to ensure a timely, proactive response and create a strategy for issues that warrant a statement or response.
Oversee administration of school website, including content curation and moderation, brand alignment, search engine optimization, and analytics.
Leverage multiple media platforms and strategies (print, video, digital) to increase engagement of key audiences (current/prospective families, alumni, donors).
Manage and maintain the district’s communications calendar (including email/print communications with students, parents, and staff).
Develop and maintain a growing library of creative assets (including photos and videos).
Support the creative design, messaging, and production of various print pieces and formal presentations.
Provide writing support for strategic communications and special projects.
Compile and share impact stories that can be used for marketing efforts, philanthropic opportunities, and major gift proposals.
Work in partnership with the Executive Director of Development and Lead Admissions Director to advance marketing, engagement, and fundraising strategies to engage target audiences.
Collaborate with other advancement team members to support ongoing initiatives and special events (admissions/enrollment, community engagement, and development/fundraising).
Direct and provide oversight to the district’s graphic designer.
Train, educate, and serve as a resource for the GRCS faculty and staff on PR, marketing, and communications efforts.
Engage actively in professional development, always learning and implementing best practices.
Act as an ambassador for GRCS, interacting with students, families, staff, alumni, partners, and larger community in a positive, supportive, and collaborative manner.
Collaborate with the Superintendent, Administrative Leadership Team, and Board of Trustees on public relations and strategic communications, including crisis response.
Serve as the GRCS liaison to news outlets.
Rapidly acclimate to Grand Rapids Christian Schools; developing a deep understanding of the history, culture, traditions, educational philosophy, and different constituencies that are served.
Work evening and weekend hours as necessary to support events.


Personal relationship with Jesus Christ; member of a Christian church.
Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Communications, or related field.
5 years of relevant experience in a progressively responsible professional marketing and communications role.
Proven experience in project management, working with a variety of stakeholders and partners (including external vendors) through the exploration, development, and execution of multi-faceted projects with tight timelines.
Proven success in brand and/or marketing management.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Comprehensive knowledge of design, copy editing, and print production.
Proven experience with website management.
Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite.
Proficiency in Google Suite (Docs/Slides/Sheets/Forms) and social media platforms.
Experience in photography, videography, and story writing.
Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail.
High degree of professionalism, creativity, and flexibility.
Strong interpersonal skills, able to develop and maintain positive relationships, excited to work collaboratively and accept constructive feedback.
Relevant experience in an educational setting is preferred.

Salary Range

Salary commensurate with experience.
